Nostalgic Summer Activities from the 1970s to 2000s

How College Students Spent Summers Way Back When

Today’s college students spend their summer vacations in far different ways than students of the past did. Ask your parents, older siblings, cousins, aunts, or uncles how they spent their summers, and I bet you get answers a lot like these, depending on the decade they were in college.

So, how does your summer break stack up to these from the past?

1970s: Roller Skating

In the 1970s, roller skating was one of the most popular activities for leisure. The phenomenon of roller skating has been revived in the last couple of years, but it isn’t like it was in the 1970s, when groups of friends would visit the skating rink for some roller disco!

1980s: Cruising the Mall

The 1980s was rife with consumerism, so it only makes sense that teens and young adults would visit the shopping mall on lazy summer days. They’d grab an Orange Julius while walking around the long hallways, window shopping, and occasionally purchasing clothes and accessories. The mall was as much a social scene as it was for shopping.

1990s: Vans Warped Tour

In 1995, the first ever Vans Warped Tour traveled around the United States. It was multiple days of listening to loud rock bands in the hot sun with sweat streaming and guitars blaring. Warped Tour became the largest traveling music festival in the United States, until it ended in 2019.

2000s: HTML Coding on MySpace

MySpace was a social media platform long before Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat. MySpace users could customize their profiles by using HTML coding, adding banner images, backgrounds, text colors, and even music. If you weren’t on MySpace, you weren’t cool, and college students stayed connected on the platform. (And then Facebook became broadly popular in 2004.) Rest in peace, MySpace.
